Artist statement
I am involved with ceramic artwork because of the wide opportunities I have uncovered in this medium and the richness I can attribute to the language of Clay. Ceramic artwork embodies shape, color, construction, texture and technology. There are unique processes attributed to ceramic arts - sculpting, drying, glazing, kiln-firing techniques - that yield results that cannot be achieved with other plastic arts.
For me, ceramic art is a synthesis of many art forms: painting, sculpting, architecture, design and graphics. Ceramic art enables me to work hands-on, experiencing the element of touch while leaving my mark through my fingertips. The firing process adds a rare gift, the influence of fire.
My artwork is highly influenced by Japanese art. I attempt to emphasize the richness of minimalism: Simple and readable structure affording a complex texture. Minimal amount of pigments that give maximal amount of colors and nuances typical to high-temperature firing.
And so, I follow the tradition of my teachers, ever aspiring to create new works that would make them proud.
