Artist statement

"Clay inspires me. Working with natural material I relate to it as a living, active entity. Every material creates its own organic image. It's the clay which leads me, my hands just follow it." Etty Spindel was born in Mexico (1962) where she grew up, until she moved to Israel in 1986. She brought with her images depicted from the horizons of her personal memory of her childhood landscapes, both internal and external, which are acclimated and integrated into the Mediterranean area. Her work is a personal diary of memories, thoughts and sensations, an inner dialogue through which she examines and sculpts her female identity and being. The personal landscapes are transformed into organic images which can reflect the inner world of every viewer. In her works, the emphasis on various textures is manifested in contrasts between smooth pebble-like pieces, and some in which she builds rough textures, reminiscent of thorns, seashells and underwater shapes. Her sensual works allure the spectator to touch and feel them.
